Slack

Add the VerseDB app to your Slack workspace and anyone in it can look up comics right in the chat. You don't need a VerseDB account to use it.

Install the app#

Go to versedb.com/bot/slack/install and approve the permissions. You need the right to install apps in that workspace. Some workspaces make an admin approve new apps first.

Once installed, /versedb works in any channel the app can post to. Your workspaces are listed under My Apps → Slack.

Commands#

Everything runs through one command. Type /versedb followed by:

  • search <query> — search comics, characters, and creators
  • issue <query> — look up a single issue (e.g. issue Batman 1)
  • series <query>, character <query>, creator <query>, publisher <query> — look up one entry
  • key-issues <query> — first appearances, deaths, and origins
  • releases — pick a week and see its new comics
  • foc — upcoming Final Order Cutoff deadlines
  • trending — what readers are picking up this week
  • new-series — new #1 issues launching soon
  • help — the full command list, shown only to you

When a lookup matches more than one entry, the reply includes a dropdown. Pick one and the message updates in place.

Replies are visible to everyone in the channel. The installer can switch a workspace to private replies from the dashboard.

Auto-posts and workspace settings#

The person who installed the app manages it from the workspace dashboard. Open My Apps → Slack and select the workspace.

Auto-posts post on a schedule to a public channel you pick. The types are Weekly Releases, FOC Deadlines, New Series, Trending, and Comic of the Day.

Each type has its own channel, plus publisher and format filters. A test button shows you a post before the schedule runs.

Search preferences set which languages and formats rank first for members who haven't linked a VerseDB account. Useful if your workspace reads mostly manga, or mostly Spanish editions. Members who link get their own tastes instead.

Linking is never required, but it adds two things. Search results rank by your own tastes. And you get a DM on release day when an issue on your pull list comes out.

To link, run /versedb link in any channel — only you see the reply. Open the link it gives you and sign in. The link expires in 30 minutes.

Release-day DMs are on once you link. Turn them off with /versedb alerts off and back on with /versedb alerts on. Unlinking from My Apps also stops all DMs.

Note

Uninstalling the app from a workspace removes its access right away. VerseDB deletes the workspace's tokens and stops all auto-posts.
