Rudolf Ising created Barney Bear for MGM, and the bear first appeared in the 1939 short The Bear That Couldn't Sleep. Good-natured and permanently sleepy, he wants peace and quiet and almost never gets it. He reached comics in 1942, with early stories by Carl Barks in Our Gang Comics.
