Indie Comic Book Day: 17 Publishers, One New Wednesday

Starting January 20, 2027, comic shops get a new date on the calendar. The third Wednesday of every month is now Indie Comic Book Day. It's a release slot built just for small-press and indie comics.

The day comes from the Indie Comic Alliance. This new publisher group formed to solve a big post-Diamond problem: how does a small press get its books onto shelves?

What is the Indie Comic Alliance

The Indie Comic Alliance launched in July 2026. Christopher Reda of Critical Entertainment and Thomas Cho of STS & Associates head it up.

The pitch to publishers is simple. The alliance offers distribution into the direct market, plus affordable printing, shipping, and storage, all in one place.

Solicitations start in October 2026. The first Indie Comic Book Day releases hit stores on January 20, 2027.

The founding publisher lineup

Seventeen publishers make up the Indie Comic Alliance roster.

Christopher Reda's Los Angeles publisher leads the alliance.

DSTLRY is in for printing only. Its distribution stays exclusive to Penguin Random House Comics.

BentBox works out of Southwest Florida.

Forbidden Futures is home to retro punk and splatter punk anthologies.

Patriot Comic Books is the comics imprint of the film company Patriot Pictures, with Christopher Reda as editor-in-chief.

World at War Comics is based in Hemet, California.

Monkeygong is Kraig Rasmussen's sci-fi comics label.

K-Toon Studios is Critical Entertainment's own imprint, headed by Thomas Cho.

Phantom Blade Productions publishes the graphic novel Ximphonic Versus.

Rae Media also goes by RAE Comics.

Comics from the alliance, already on VerseDB

Seven of these publishers already have catalogs on VerseDB. Here's a taste of what each one makes.

Red 5 Comics built its name on Atomic Robo. The pulp adventure series is still the publisher's flagship. DSTLRY's The Devil's Cut was part of the publisher's first wave of creator-owned launches. Zombie Zero comes from Critical Entertainment. It's one of Christopher Reda's own titles. Outland Entertainment's Vikingverse crossed several of the publisher's fantasy lines into one event. Monster Matador is 2510 Press's longest-running series so far. Diabolik's Professor Dario Bava: Murder Vibes From The Monster Dimension! is a horror-comedy one-shot. Printing gets cheaper too

The Indie Comic Alliance isn't the only group fixing small-press logistics this year. Massive runs the Massive Indies sub-distribution program through Lunar Distribution.

Massive now offers its Indies clients discounted printing. That covers offset, digital, and specialty finishes like foil and embossing.

"Our goal has always been to remove barriers for independent publishers," said Michael Calero, CEO of Massive Publishing. Massive plans to open the discount to the public by the end of 2026.

Massive Indies already counts Heavy Metal, AMP Comics, Antarctic Press, and Devil's Due Studios as clients. Invader Comics and Midnight Factory are on the list too.

What it means for retailers and readers

Indie Comic Book Day gives retailers a fixed, predictable release date for small-press books, instead of scattered ones. For readers, it means one Wednesday a month built around finding something outside the Big Two.
