Diablo's New Comic Fills the Gap Before Lord of Hatred
Diablo: Dawn of Hatred is officially canon, and it covers the months Blizzard skipped between Vessel of Hatred and Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred. If you played the expansion and wondered how Mephisto got from Point A to Point B, this comic is the answer.
The Setup: From a 2018 Partnership to a 2025 Debut
Titan Comics had been circling a Diablo partnership with Blizzard since 2018. Dawn of Hatred finally landed on Free Comic Book Day, May 3, 2025. That issue was a preview of the story to come.
The four-issue main series started with Issue #1 on April 22, 2026. Lord of Hatred went live six days later, on April 28.
The overlap was planned.
Cullen Bunn writes the series. He's an Eisner-nominated horror author, best known for Harrow County. Daniele Serra draws it, Jovanna Plata colors it, and Titan publishes it under license from Blizzard.
All four issues are out now. The run closed with #4 on July 29, 2026.
The Lore Connection: Mephisto Wearing a Saint's Face
Akarat is one of the most important figures in the franchise. He was the ancient ascetic whose teachings founded the Zakarum faith, the main religion of Sanctuary since Diablo II.
He's been dead for centuries. And now, in this comic, he's walking around again, healing the sick, feeding the poor, and preaching peace and the Light.
He isn't Akarat. It's Mephisto.
After the events of Vessel of Hatred, Mephisto escaped the Soul Stone and took over Akarat's corpse. He's roaming Sanctuary in plain sight, working miracles and gathering followers.
Two skeptics ride in his caravan and slowly work out the truth. Derris is a barbarian of the Fox Tribe, and his people have pledged themselves to the prophet. Vrexia is harder to read, and she has her own reasons to distrust him.
The comic shows how Mephisto moves across Sanctuary and builds his following. By the time Lord of Hatred opens, Lorath Nahr and the Wanderer reach the Yshari Sanctum and find Neyrelle dead. Her notes point to Mephisto, still wearing Akarat's face, already heading for the Skovos Isles.
The comic fills the months in between. Without it, that reveal plays like a cut scene. With it, you know exactly what Mephisto has been doing and why.
Why This Matters to Collectors
Vessel of Hatred ends without a fight against Mephisto himself. Players face the Harbinger of Hatred instead, and the campaign closes with Mephisto loose and Neyrelle's story still open. Plenty of players finished it feeling they got setup where they wanted a payoff.
Filling that gap with a licensed, canon comic is new ground for the franchise. Earlier Diablo comics sat outside the game timeline. Dawn of Hatred sits inside it.
That gives Dawn of Hatred a different weight. It's four issues plus a Free Comic Book Day preview, licensed from Blizzard and timed to a game launch.
Issue #0 is the one to watch. FCBD copies go out free and get read. Very few get bagged, and that thins the supply a few years on.
Why the Creative Team Fits Diablo
Cullen Bunn has spent a career in horror comics, and dread is the register Diablo runs on. Daniele Serra paints rather than inks. The murk suits Sanctuary better than a clean line would.
Read It Before You Finish the Expansion
If you're partway through Lord of Hatred, or about to start it, read Dawn of Hatred first. It fills in what Mephisto has been doing in Sanctuary. That makes his arc in the expansion land harder, and gives Derris and Vrexia's fates some weight.
